...of a Writer!

Greetings and salutations, Future Panthers!

Being a writer means different things to different people. It can be a means of expression, a form of therapy, a way to form thoughts into words, a medium to tell someone how you feel...the possibilities are endless.

Christian, for instance, is the voice of the children of the revolution. (Note: if you don't understand this reference, stop reading this post and go watch Moulin Rouge. Now.)

Ever since I was a kid, I've loved to write. It started when I began writing short stories in fourth grade (typically about fairies, but hey, gotta start somewhere right?), then a few years down the road found myself reading fiction assignments aloud to my classmates in junior high. Later on, I was fortunate enough to take a few writing workshops that helped to develop my writing skills, which only fueled my passion for the craft. While UNI does not offer Creative Writing as a major, there are plenty of opportunities on campus for aspiring writers such as myself!

UNI offers a Creative Writing minor that includes an array of classes that students can take "a la carte", meaning they are available to students without a Creative Writing minor. Such classes include Genre Seminars, Critical Writing About Literature, Poetry and Fiction Workshops, and more.

As far as getting work published, UNI is home to Inner Weather, a student-run literary magazine which is financed by the Department of Languages and Literatures. Students can submit original work in the form of ficiton, nonfiction, poetry, and artwork. It is published yearly and showcases anywhere between 10 and 30 artists. You can learn more about Inner Weather here: http://www.uni.edu/langlit/publications

If you are more of a journalist than a novelist, there is always the UNI student newspaper, the Northern Iowan. The Northern Iowan employs journalists to write all sorts of columns, from sports to opinion to political. Students are also hired as photographers and editors for the newspaper. Check out the NI's website here: http://www.northern-iowan.org/

The Northern Iowan newspaper logo- nice usage of the Campanile, right?

Off campus, local venues such as The Lampost and Octopus host slam poetry nights, and guest authors sometimes come to perform readings!

This year, I will be submitting my work to Inner Weather and the Theatre Department's Ten-Minute Play Festival. I'm a little nervous, but also very excited! It is a big step for writers to share and submit their work, but one of the most thrilling and rewarding experiences there is. Wish me luck and look for my name in the next publication of Inner Weather!

Keep putting the pen to paper, Future Panthers!

...Of figuring out my future!

Hey guys!

So before college I was always told to expect to change my major at least once. Well, once I made it to my junior year here at UNI, I thought I was the exception...

Not so much.

Over the course of my last two and a half years as a panther, I was a declared Studio Art major with a Graphic Design emphasis. With that major I've had some amazing professors and produced some of my very best work... but this fall, coming into my junior year, I knew that the Graphic Design field just wasn't where I wanted to be after graduation.

I like to call it my 20-year old life crisis.

Upon this realization, I made another one. That instead of pursuing art, I wanted to go into the medical field. Crazy jump, huh? My parents and friends definitely thought so, but were supportive none the less. At that point I knew what I wanted to do but had no clue how to get there... Until I found Joan.

Joan is an academic advisor from the biology department and I credit her completely with turning my lofty dreams of medical school into a concrete plan. A plan that would, with the addition of a few summer classes, have me graduating on time with the completion of my studio art degree, as well as all the courses necessary to be prepared for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).

I went from being so sure of my major, to changing it completely, to having no idea what to do, to having a plan.. all in the span of a single semester. It's really all thanks to the incredible faculty and staff here at UNI that got me headed back in the right direction and more confident than ever that I can achieve all that I want to do.

So if you have your intended major set in stone, great. And if you change your mind like I did, rest assured that UNI has just the people that can help! :)

Stay awesome baby panthers!

..of Panther Past!

Hey there, baby Panthers!

Do your parents ever say things that start with "Back in my day...", or "When I was your age.."? Whenever my parents come to visit me here in Cedar Falls, I hear these things over and over again seeing as my mom and dad both attended UNI. After hearing them tell me about how different the campus was when they were in college it got me thinking about what our now gorgeous campus looked like in years past.

After looking in the ROD library files I found some really awesome pictures that show how different things looked many, many years ago. Before the Curris Business Building was built, the land used to be tennis courts and a pond that was often used by students for ice skating during the winter! How awesome it that!?

I hope you all enjoy seeing how much campus has changed over time as much as I did! It makes me excited to see what the future has in store for UNI!
